League Rules

Basic RUles of Beach Volleyball:

There will be a spin of the ball to start the match. The winner of the spin (direction the valve faces) may choose to either serve or receive for the 1st set. The loser of the spin can choose sides. There will be another spin before the start of the 3rd set.
Each team is permitted 1 time-out per set (30 seconds per time-out).
The server has 5 seconds to put the ball in play and is allowed only 1 toss.
The ball may be served from any point behind the end line.
All balls must be hit cleanly. No scooping or carrying the ball. Only off of a hard driven ball may a double hit occur (ie. off arm and head in one continuous motion).
The ball may be played with any part of the body.
A hard driven ball is ball is classified as a ball hit with a full swing and has very little arc.
The let serve is permitted (not a fault if the service hits the net, continues over, and remains
within the court boundaries).
A served ball cannot be blocked, spiked, or volleyed directly back over the net.
A player may never use an open hand to volley a serve nor can a player execute an open-handed volley on a 1st contact (every time the ball crosses the net including a free ball) with the ball unless it is hard-driven. A serve is NEVER considered a hard-driven ball regardless of its velocity. A served ball may be received with your hands IF you can play the ball above your head with closed hands.
If a player is going to play the ball into the opponent’s court by setting or volleying, the player must contact the ball with 2 hands above the shoulders and it must be set directly forward or backward in relation to the player’s body (shoulders and hips should be in the same position from prior to the set happening). NO DUMPING!!! This applies even if it is the team’s 3rd hit.
‘Sets’ that drift over the net are permitted.
No open-handed tipping. players who contact the ball with one hand and are putting the ball over the net must cleanly hit with the heel of the hand ( roll shot), with straight locked fingers and a locked wrist (cobra), two curled fingers (pokey), or with the back of the hand (locked wrist and locked fingers/knuckles). Open handed placement or redirection of the ball with the fingers (dink or open-handed tip) is a foul.
If the ball is contacted during a block, this counts as the first contact and the ball must be put over the net with no more than two more contacts. The blocker who touches the ball may play the ball on the next touch.
Contact with the net (except for hair) in any way constitutes loss pf point. A player that goes under the net but does not contact the net or interfere with play is okay. NOTE - if the wind pushes the net into a player then this is not considered a foul and play should continue.
